In the past couple of years Manchester United have laid a plan to fix a specific issue that has been haunting the club for a long time now. The wage structure at United has been one of the prime examples of the poor running of the club in the last 10 plus years. The 500k a week contract to Alexis Sanchez, the 375k a week contract to David De Gea, the Phil Jones extension, and many more poor decisions. In recent times United have had to take a huge loss on players to get rid of these wages.

The likes of Alexis, De Gea, and Phil Jones all left the club for free after the club was unable to sell them at any point due to their wages. It appears Anthony Martial will suffer the same fate as United are unlikely to recover a transfer fee for the player this month. When you look at United’s wage book now it is better than it was a few years ago, but the club are not done trying to lower some of the wages.

Two of the three highest earners at the club currently are Raphael Varane and Casemiro. The two ex-Real Madrid players signed huge contracts at United due to their reputation around football and how desperate United were for the two players. Varane had signed a four-year deal but there was an option after the third year which United are not ready to trigger. United faced a similar situation to this last season with David De Gea. The club were never able to agree to fresh terms which led to the Spaniard leaving the club.

Varane’s time at Manchester United can be viewed with a mixed outlook as performance-wise the Frenchman has given several world class performances, but the injury woes and the high wages play a factor in United being hesitant to trigger the option.

Is Varane willing to take a pay cut to stay in Manchester?

According to Alex Crook of TalkSport, it would take a drastic pay cut for Varane to be able to stay with the Red Devils and Crook feels that the Frenchman would not be too keen. Varane is now free to talk with any clubs for a summer move.
