Manchester United have completed the signing of Danish youngster Patrick Dorgu from Lecce for a fee of €30 million plus €5 million in add-ons. The versatile left-sided player, who can operate as a full-back, wing-back, or winger, has been hailed as one of the most exciting young talents in European football.
Dorgu, born in Copenhagen to Nigerian parents, has long been inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo. “Don’t you get tired of always watching the same thing?” his mother, Clara, would ask him as a child when he repeatedly watched videos of his idol. “Why do you say that? One day he will know who I am,” he would reply.
His football journey began almost by chance. “Gabriel, his older brother, was the goalkeeper for our team, and Paul and Clara, his parents, both worked full-time, so after school, Patrick and Ifenna (his younger brother) would come to training too,” Iben Johnsen, manager of Husum Boldklub, told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Dorgu's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly progressed through the ranks at FC Copenhagen before moving to Italy to join Lecce. His performances in Serie A caught the attention of several top European clubs, but it was Manchester United who ultimately won the race for his signature.
Speaking about his move to Old Trafford, Dorgu said: “It's a dream come true to join such a big club. I've always admired Manchester United and their history. I can't wait to get started and work with the manager and my new teammates.”
The signing of Dorgu is a statement of intent from Manchester United. The club is clearly looking to build a team for the future, and the young Dane is seen as a key part of those plans.
