A 1-3 home defeat to Brighton has further compounded Manchester United's woes this season. Despite recent positive results against Liverpool and Arsenal, the Red Devils have reverted to their inconsistent ways, highlighting the underlying issues within the squad.
With 14 games under manager Ruben Amorim, the improvement has been marginal. The team lacks a clinical striker, a creative midfielder, and a solid defense, leaving them closer to the relegation zone than the European places. The loss against Brighton sees United languishing in 13th place, a far cry from the ambitions of a club of their stature.
Brighton, on the other hand, capitalized on United's vulnerabilities. Their direct style and clinical finishing proved too much for the home side. Yankuba Minteh opened the scoring early on, showcasing Brighton's ability to exploit space behind the United defense. Although Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, Brighton regained the lead in the second half through Kaoru Mitoma, who took advantage of poor marking and a hesitant André Onana. Georginio Rutter sealed the victory with a simple finish after Onana spilled a cross.
The club faces a challenging task in turning their fortunes around. A significant overhaul of the squad is likely to be required, with investment needed in all areas of the team. The manager will also come under increasing pressure to deliver results.
