Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has launched a scathing attack on defender Lisandro Martínez, claiming the Argentine is "not good enough" to win the Premier League.
Scholes, speaking on Sky Sports' The Overlap Fan Debate, was highly critical of Martinez, who has been sidelined for several months with a serious knee injury. The former midfielder argued that even when fit, Martinez is not of the required quality to help United challenge for the Premier League title.
"Even when he's physically fit, he's not good enough to win the Premier League," Scholes said. "I think he's disappointed a lot of people with his attitude, and I think that's what the manager is trying to say. The way he conducts himself says he doesn't want to be involved with the team."
Martinez has been a regular fixture in the United team since joining from Ajax in 2022, but his time at Old Trafford has been plagued by injuries. His latest setback, a cruciate ligament rupture, will keep him out for several months.
Scholes' comments have sparked a heated debate among Manchester United fans. While some agree with the former midfielder's assessment, others have defended Martinez, pointing to his impressive performances before his injury.
Scholes went on to criticize the overall state of the Manchester United squad, calling for a major overhaul. "I think we need a new goalkeeper, possibly two centre-backs, two midfielders, and two strikers," he said. "That's a big rebuild, but it's necessary if we want to challenge for trophies again."
The former midfielder also took aim at the club's current manager, suggesting that he could be facing the sack if the team's fortunes do not improve. "If they don't do it this summer, it could sound ridiculous, but the way this manager is going, they could be fighting relegation. I'm telling you, it's been very poor," Scholes added.
Martinez has not responded publicly to Scholes' comments. However, the Argentine defender has received widespread support from his teammates and the club's fans. Following his injury, Manchester United players wore t-shirts with a message of support for Martinez during a recent match.
