Manchester City delivered a humiliating 8-0 thrashing to Salford City in the FA Cup on Saturday, leaving the club owned by the Class of '92 reeling. The gulf in class between the Premier League champions and the fourth-tier side was evident throughout the match, as Pep Guardiola's men cruised to a comfortable victory.
The fixture against Salford City, a club co-owned by David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt, was billed as a dream tie for many fans. However, the reality was far from idyllic for the former Manchester United legends as they watched their side get dismantled by their city rivals.
The Citizens raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Jeremy Doku, Divin Mubama, and Nico O'Reilly. The second half was more of the same, as City added five more goals through Jack Grealish, Doku, and a hat-trick from James McAtee.
The contrast between the two teams was stark. City's possession-based style of play and clinical finishing were in stark contrast to Salford's more direct approach. The gulf in quality was evident in every aspect of the game, from the players' technical ability to the overall tactical awareness.
For Salford, the defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow. However, the club will now turn their attention back to their league campaign, where they are currently sitting in third place and aiming for promotion to League One. Despite the heavy defeat, the experience of playing against a team of City's caliber will be invaluable for the Salford players.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will be delighted with their performance. The victory was a further demonstration of their dominance in English football. With Pep Guardiola at the helm, the Citizens are aiming to win a historic treble this season.
