It’s fair to say that Manchester United are massively underachieving this season. The Red Devils find themselves seventh in table, out of Europe completely, and remain in only two competitions. In the Premier League, they find themselves eight points out of the final Champions League spot which is United’s last hope of making it to Europe’s elite competition next season.

They say hindsight is 20/20, and in this case, it appears that Manchester United severely overachieved last season. The club were able to finish third in the Premier League, won the Carabao Cup in February, and reached the FA Cup final before losing to rivals Manchester City. All in all, it was a successful season for the Red Devils. Yet despite almost everything going right last season, the complete opposite has happened this season.

When looking to find reasons for what has gone wrong, an easy answer is the attack. Manchester United attackers rank in the bottom half of the league when it comes to goals scored, which is a massive issue. Marcus Rashford, who was on incredible form last season has cooled down, and Rasmus Hojlund has not provided the club yet with the attacking punch that they needed from their striker position. One can also say the defense is not as strong as last year with the injuries of Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, and Casemiro.

Once you move on from the players, the eyes go on the manager. After impressing everyone in his debut season, Erik Ten Hag has now become a target for criticism in the media constantly. When results start going sideways, it’s open floor season for reporters and pundits to write the narratives.

Jamie Carragher says Ten Hag’s assistant has had a huge influence

Although assistants are not the managers, they still have a major influence on the tactics and most of the time they oversee training. Well Jamie Carragher believes Steve McClaren has a huge influence on United’s style of play. “We’d do different things every week, sometimes you might go away in Europe and you play counter-attack, or you play a small team at home and you know you’re going to have lots of the ball. United feel a little bit like it’s football from our day, 20 years ago,” said Carragher.
