ESPN's Mark Ogden has suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival at Manchester United in 2021 may have had a negative impact on the development of Marcus Rashford. The Portuguese superstar's signing was a blockbuster move that captured the imagination of fans around the world, but it also raised questions about the playing time and development of the young English forward.
Rashford had emerged as one of the brightest young talents in English football before Ronaldo's arrival. His pace, direct running, and eye for goal had made him a fan favorite at Old Trafford. However, with Ronaldo in the team, Rashford found himself competing for a place in the starting XI.
Ronaldo's arrival inevitably meant increased competition for places in the Manchester United attack. While the Portuguese star brought a wealth of experience and goalscoring ability to the team, his presence also meant that Rashford was often deployed out of position or on the bench. This lack of regular game time may have hindered Rashford's development as a player.
Since Ronaldo's departure, Rashford has rediscovered his form and has been one of Manchester United's most consistent performers. This has led to speculation that the pressure of playing alongside Ronaldo may have hindered his progress.
If Ronaldo had not joined Manchester United, it is possible that Rashford's career would have taken a very different path. The young Englishman may have had more opportunities to develop as a player and could have become an even more influential figure at the club.
