Ratcliffes top target might find himself in Rome instead of Manchester

One of the key pieces to building a successful and consistent club is having a proper director of football. Liverpool had Michael Edwards, City have Txiki Begiristain, United had David Gill once upon a time. All those guys built successful periods for their respective clubs.

Since the departure of David Gill and Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils direction in the market has been all over the place. A proper plan was never put in place other than just throw money at it and hope it sticks. The results have shown that it has in fact not stuck, and now Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team come into United with a mission to change this plan and put in a logical one instead.

The departure of CEO Richard Arnold was a positive start, and the likely departure of John Murtough is another positive as Ratcliffe looks to cause a shakeup upstairs and get in guys that are more experienced. One of the names that has been linked with Utd throughout the whole takeover saga is Paul Mitchell. The former Monaco sporting director has been linked with United on several occasions including in 2019 whilst Mitchell was at RB Leipzig. The Mancunian left Monaco this past October and the links to United only intensified.

Mitchell has been seen at Utd academy games before and was prominent there when Ralf Rangnick was interim coach in the 21/22 campaign. Ratcliffe has been on record saying he wants to build a stronger English culture within the club including both players and staff members. With strong links to Paul Mitchell and Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth, it seems Ratcliffe is ready to follow up on his wishes.

Roma Ready to Hijack

United are not the only club looking to start a new era, as AS Roma sacked Jose Mourinho this morning and hired ex player Danielle De Rossi. As part of their new era, Roma need a DOF and Paul Mitchell is one of the names. Italian Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio said that Roma have already held a meeting with Paul Mitchell to become their new sporting director.
