With 26 points from 22 games, Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim has two more points than his Scottish predecessor did in the 1989-1990 season. Amorim hasn't minced his words. Deeply affected by the home defeat against Brighton, the Portuguese coach dared to suggest that his team might be the worst in Manchester United's history.
A harsh statement, but one that underscores the grim reality for the Red Devils. Since arriving last November, the former Sporting boss has already lost 6 of the 11 Premier League matches he has managed. The defeat to the Seagulls was the tenth of the season, leaving United in 13th place with only 26 points, a low record, but not the worst in their history at this stage.
In the 1989-1990 season, Sir Alex Ferguson's worst, his team had accumulated just 24 points and 10 defeats in the same stretch of the competition. Curiously, they also finished in 13th place, with 16 defeats, the highest record in 51 years. Worse campaigns occurred in 1914-1915, 1972-1973, 1927-1928, 1962-1963, and the infamous 1930-1931, where they finished in 22nd place, conceding 115 goals in 42 matches.
Thirty-five years ago, Sir Alex had a difficult season, but he managed to win the FA Cup, his first title with United. According to reports, Ferguson advised Amorim to stay positive. An encouraging message for the 39-year-old coach.
While it's clear that United are in a difficult period, the historical context provides some perspective. Even the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson faced challenges in his early years at the club. Amorim's situation, while undoubtedly challenging, is not without precedent.
It's important to remember that Ferguson's success at Manchester United was built on a foundation of patience and perseverance. He was given the time and resources to rebuild the club and establish a dynasty. While Amorim may not have the same luxury, his early struggles should not be seen as a definitive failure.
