Dimitar Berbatov has advised Manchester United on how to handle Marcus Rashford's disciplinary issues. The forward was absent from United’s squad for their FA Cup tie with Newport County on Sunday. This was after Rashford declared himself fit and was effectively dropped after being pictured in a Belfast nightclub in the early hours of Friday morning.

The situation was described as an “internal disciplinary matter” by manager Erik ten Hag. The United boss has demonstrated his willingness to enforce disciplinary measures, as evidenced by Jadon Sancho earlier this season. Rashford was also dropped by Ten Hag after being late to a team meeting last January. He is not expected to start against Wolves on Thursday.

Discussing Rashford, Berbatov offered no defence of the 26-year-old’s behaviour and suggested he would be dropped by Ten Hag this week. However, the two-time Premier League winner feels that United need to uncover the root cause of Rashford’s problems and dip in form. The England international has scored four times so far this season, following on from his tally of 30 goals last term.

“Then comes the next question; why is he acting the way he’s acting? That’s the main question,” Berbatov told Betfair. “What are the reasons for this behaviour? If someone knows the answer to this then how do you fix it? “Obviously, I’ll never stop saying Rashford is a big talent, but if he doesn’t correct his way of behaving then he won’t go in the right direction. When someone isn’t famous for disciplinary issues or different antics outside of the football pitch and they start acting like this in an unprofessional way, it’s always surprising.

Final comments

“You think about a player and then you see a different side to them when they act out of character. What’s the reason for the change? There must be a reason.” “If United don’t find the answer for this then this behaviour will continue,” Berbatov added. “If United find the answer to why he’s behaving like this and help him, then hopefully everything will go back to normal and he’ll continue to play and be more focused and concentrated. “People will be surprised but based on previous small misbehaviours, you can see something is there. I’ve spoken about his form on the pitch, he’s been late to the team meeting before. So, something is there and until United don’t fix it, I think his behaviour will continue like this.”
