From football to film: He turned down Manchester United and became James Bond

Before he became 007, Sean Connery could have been a Manchester United legend. The Scottish actor, best known for his portrayal of James Bond, had a promising career in football before choosing to pursue acting.

In the 1950s, while playing for Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic, a junior football club in Scotland, Connery caught the eye of Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby. Impressed by the young Scotsman's talent, Busby offered him a contract. "He did very well for the club, was well thought of in the game and most of the other clubs were very jealous of us having him," said Nat Fisher, a former club employee. "He was quick, strong and very able to look after himself. He would take a lot of punishment but would get up and be ready to go again."

Connery himself admitted that he was tempted by the offer to join Manchester United. "I really wanted to accept because I loved football," he said. "But I realised that a top-class footballer is finished by 30, and I was already 23. I decided to be an actor, which turned out to be one of the smartest things I ever did."

The decision to pursue acting proved to be a wise one. Connery went on to become one of the most famous actors of his generation, starring in iconic films such as Dr. No and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
