Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot has opened up about the demands of playing under new manager Rubén Amorim, revealing that the Portuguese coach has tasked him with adopting a more attacking role.
Speaking after the 2-2 draw with Liverpool, Dalot discussed the tactical changes introduced by Amorim and how they have impacted his own game. "It took me a while to get used to," Dalot admitted. "It's very physically demanding, but I know I can handle it. I'm a full-back, I'm used to running. I'm trying to do what the manager asks of me and improve as I go along."
Amorim's arrival at Old Trafford has coincided with a shift towards a more attacking style of play. The Portuguese coach has placed a strong emphasis on the full-backs providing width and attacking threat, and Dalot has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of this tactical change.
"The manager wants me to get forward more and create chances," Dalot explained. "It's a different role to what I've played in the past, but I'm enjoying the challenge. I'm learning new things every day, and I feel like I'm improving as a player."
The 25-year-old has been a key player for Manchester United since joining the club from Porto in 2018. However, he has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular under previous managers. Amorim's arrival has provided Dalot with a fresh start, and the Portuguese defender is determined to seize his opportunity.
Dalot's ability to get forward and provide width has been a major asset for Manchester United this season. His overlapping runs and pinpoint crosses have created numerous scoring opportunities for his teammates. The Portuguese defender has also shown a willingness to track back and defend when necessary, making him a well-rounded full-back.
While Dalot is enjoying his new role under Amorim, he has admitted that it is not without its challenges. "It's a lot of running," he said. "You have to be very fit to play in this system. But I'm working hard in training to improve my fitness and my technical ability."
With Amorim at the helm, Manchester United look set to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming seasons. Dalot is a key part of the manager's plans, and the Portuguese defender will be hoping to continue his development and help the club achieve success.
