Manchester United's decision to sign André Onana for a hefty €51 million has come under scrutiny as the Cameroonian goalkeeper has failed to live up to expectations.
The Red Devils splashed out a significant sum to bring Onana to Old Trafford in 2023, securing him on a five-year deal with an option for an additional year. The move was seen as a statement of intent from the club, with manager Erik ten Hag keen to reunite with a goalkeeper he had worked with successfully at Ajax.
However, the high-risk, high-reward gamble has so far failed to pay off. Onana has struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League and has been criticized for several high-profile errors. The club could potentially pay an additional €4 million in variables, further increasing the overall cost of the deal.
The arrival of Rubén Amorim as manager has not seemed to improve Onana's fortunes. The Portuguese coach, known for his possession-based style of play, has been unable to unlock the goalkeeper's full potential.
The high fee paid for Onana has raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike. Many have questioned whether the club could have found a more suitable candidate for a lower price. With the goalkeeper's contract still in its early stages, United are now facing a dilemma: do they persist with Onana and hope that he can eventually find his form, or do they cut their losses and look for a replacement?
