Manchester United have made several signings where the mood was positive around the signing, but a little while after the mood quickly dampens. We saw it happen with Angel Di Maria, Romelu Lukaku, and Memphis Depay. There is one recent transfer that fits this category, and that transfer was the arrival of the young English forward Jadon Sancho.

Jadon Sancho and Manchester United seemed like a move that was destined to happen as the club had a long-standing interest in the player from 2018. It was reported that upon Ole Gunnar Solksjaer arrival, that Jadon Sancho was the Norwegian’s top target. The first summer nothing ever materialized, but the summer of 2020 is when it really started.
Manchester United wanted to make a splash in the 2020 summer window after securing Champions League football, and their biggest target was Jadon Sancho. They agreed personal terms quickly but United were never able to make Dortmund budge on their price of 120 million Euros. For United it turned out to be wise as they signed Jadon one year later for 72 million British pounds.
The excitement soon went as Jadon Sancho was never able to find his feet at United and replicate his Dortmund success. There could be many factors involved, including multiple coaching changes and not fitting the system. The worst for Sancho at United came this season when he was publicly criticized by Erik Ten Hag which led to Sancho posting on social media which got him isolated from the squad. All that led to a return to Dortmund on loan this winter where the player seems to have found his smile and can enjoy his football once again. When Sancho left Dortmund to go back to England it felt like he was coming home, but the fact could be that Dortmund is Sancho’s true home.

Whilst Sancho would probably love to move back to Dortmund that just might not be possible according to Dortmund’s chief Sebastian Kehl. Kehl said “If he develops in the way we hope, then other clubs will become active in the summer and then he will probably be a category of player that will be difficult for Borussia Dortmund to afford. But we’ll see what happens in the summer.”
