Lindelof’s current deal was due to expire next summer, but United had the chance to extend it a further 12 months and have opted to do so. The Sweden captain has been Erik ten Hag’s most used centre-back so far this season, making 18 appearances in all competitions.

Though Ten Hag has also fielded Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans in the centre of defence, Lindelof is viewed as important to the Dutchman’s plans and system. The 29-year-old, who has also been deployed at left-back on occasions this term, joined United from Benfica in 2017 for £31million and has gone on to make 171 Premier League appearances.

Manchester United took care of their more pressing contract situations towards the end of 2022-23 and over the summer with Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford signing long-term deals.

Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial and Hannibal Mejbri will also be out of contract at United in June. Bar Heaton and Evans, United retain an option to extend all of those contracts by a further year.nThe loan deals of Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon are also due to expire next summer.

Securing a contract before the end of the year

Ten Hag expressed his excitement at the chance to work with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS at Manchester United, saying on Friday: “They want to work with me and I want to work with them”. United announced on Christmas Eve that they had agreed a deal for British billionaire Ratcliffe to purchase a minority stake in the club.
