Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has embarked on a new entrepreneurial venture, creating his own stud farm and breeding racehorses. The 81-year-old Scotsman, who enjoyed an iconic 26-year reign at Old Trafford, is looking to replicate his success on the football pitch in the world of horse racing.
Ferguson has long been a keen racehorse owner, having previously enjoyed three victories in the Grand National. However, his latest venture marks a significant escalation of his involvement in the sport. The creation of Upperwood Farm Stud in Hemel Hempstead demonstrates his commitment to breeding top-class racehorses.
The most promising horse to emerge from Ferguson's stud so far is Spirit Dancer, a six-year-old gelding by Frankel. Spirit Dancer is set to compete in the Bahrain International on Friday, with a potential prize of £500,000 on offer. But the real money lies in stud fees, which could generate millions of pounds in the coming years.
Ferguson's new venture comes as he is set to become a mentor to the club's new owner, Jim Ratcliffe. The Ineos billionaire is close to completing a £1.3 billion takeover of Manchester United and is expected to seek guidance from Ferguson on how to restore the club to its former glory.
Ferguson's success in both football and horse racing is a testament to his eye for talent and his ability to build winning teams. His experience and knowledge will be invaluable to Ratcliffe as he looks to transform Manchester United.
