Despite encouraging performances against Liverpool and Arsenal in recent weeks, the Red Devils have conceded 28 goals in their opening 20 Premier League matches. Manager Ruben Amorim, who favours a 3-4-3 formation, is keen to add further depth and quality to his defensive line as United look to mount a challenge for European qualification in the second half of the season.

Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, and the emerging Lenny Yoro have all been vying for a starting place, but Amorim believes his squad could still benefit from additional defensive reinforcements.

Despite previously stating that he would not be targeting any of his former players at Sporting, Maisfutebol reports that Amorim is now pushing for a move for Inácio. "I won't sign any Sporting players for Manchester United in January... then, what will happen in the summer I don't know," Amorim explained. "Sporting players are good players. We'll see what happens..."

However, despite these comments, it is believed that Amorim is now keen to reunite with the 12-time capped Portuguese international. Reports suggest that United have made an initial six-month loan offer to the Portuguese champions, which also includes an obligation to make the deal permanent for £33 million at the end of the current campaign.

Inácio, who is contracted to Sporting until 2027, has been a key player for the Lisbon club since breaking into the first team in the 2020/21 season. The 23-year-old, who can also operate at left-back and defensive midfield, has made 191 appearances for Sporting, scoring 18 goals and providing 12 assists. The Portuguese international possesses excellent passing ability, composure on the ball, and a strong defensive presence.

A perfect fit for Amorim's system

Inácio's ability to play in a variety of defensive roles would make him a valuable asset for United. His comfort on the ball and his ability to build attacks from deep would be a perfect fit for Amorim's possession-based style of play.

A long-term investment

At 23 years old, Inácio has plenty of time to develop into one of the best defenders in the world. A move to Manchester United would represent a significant step forward in his career and would allow him to test himself against the best players in the Premier League.

Strengthening the defence

The addition of Inácio would provide United with a much-needed boost in defence. The Portuguese defender would add quality, depth, and versatility to the backline, allowing United to compete more effectively in both domestic and European competitions.
