Manchester United, particularly during the Sir Alex Ferguson era, saw dozens of players who became club legends. But few of them reached the status and height that Paul Scholes achieved within the Red Devils.
The midfielder played his entire career, spanning more than two decades, at Manchester United, with more than 700 appearances. His word is one of the most authoritative and he is heard every time he gives his opinion on what is happening around Old Trafford.
And although he recently targeted Lisandro Martínez, on this occasion he did not refer to the present of Manchester United, but mentioned the best teammates he had within his beloved club. And, surprisingly for many, he did not name Cristiano Ronaldo.
The names Paul Scholes gave in dialogue with TNT Sports, were those of Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs.
"Eric Cantona had a massive impact on the club. I only played with him for a year, maybe two, but he was a sensational player and probably the missing link in the team, which allowed us to take the leap forward and win the league," Scholes began about the Frenchman who turned the club around during the 90s.
Scholes continued: "Bryan Robson was one of my childhood heroes. I was fortunate to play with him towards the end of his career, but he was a very active midfielder who could do everything a Manchester United midfielder should be able to do," he detailed about his compatriot, who spent more than a decade at the club.
The next on Scholes' list was Roy Keane. About the historic midfielder, whom Ferguson had complete trust and esteem for, the red-haired detailed: "Roy Keane gave everything for this club, he was the captain, he was the coach on the field for me. He did absolutely everything, he helped in defense, in attack, he contributed in everything that a Manchester United midfielder should contribute."
"Wayne Rooney was a brilliant, amazing player. He had a natural power as a youngster, sensational technique and a brilliant scoring ability. I was fortunate enough to play with him for a while," he explained about the top scorer in the history of the club and with whom he shared his last decade as a footballer.
And, the best teammate of his entire career was none other than Ryan Giggs. Together they spent more than twenty years at Manchester United, an entire football career shared between the one-club-men.
"Number one. What he did for this club from the age of 17 until he was forty, was simply amazing. As a youngster, a winger who passed people and lifted the fans off their seats, excited them and changed games. Then, when he got older, he took a more centralized role and was just as influential," he said.
