Manchester United are on the cusp of embarking on a transformative project that could reshape the landscape of the city. A new report detailing the regeneration of Old Trafford and the surrounding areas has revealed ambitious plans that could see the creation of up to 48,000 jobs and 5,000 new homes.
The £4.2 billion project, dubbed "the biggest since the 2012 Olympics" by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, proposes a complete overhaul of the Old Trafford area. This could involve either a significant redevelopment of the existing stadium to increase its capacity to 87,000, or the construction of a brand new 100,000-seater stadium.
The report, which includes an executive summary by Deloitte and an economic impact study by Oxford Economics, will be presented to Trafford Council leaders on January 27th. The council will then be asked to approve the next stage of this "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
The regeneration plans extend beyond the stadium itself. They include the redevelopment of Trafford Wharfside, with the potential for up to 12,000 new homes. The project is expected to benefit all sectors of the economy, from construction and hospitality to retail and leisure.
Mayor Burnham emphasized the significance of this project, stating, "These proposals offer the biggest opportunity for urban regeneration this country has seen since London 2012 and are an important part of our 10-year plan to turbocharge growth not only around Old Trafford but across Greater Manchester."
He further highlighted the broader benefits of the project, stating, "By beginning to move freight away from the site we can bring new life to underused industrial land, open up capacity on our rail network, and unlock massive potential across the whole of the North."
The project will require close collaboration between Trafford Council, Manchester United, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA). A Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) is also being considered to help drive the regeneration and ensure the project's success.
A decision on whether to redevelop the existing Old Trafford or build a brand new stadium is expected to be made before the end of the season.
This ambitious project has the potential to not only transform Old Trafford but also to revitalize the surrounding areas, creating a lasting legacy for the city of Manchester.
